please help 422 shock adjustments

I have the RAP version so adjustment for me is just a simple turn of the dial.
I have though adjusted the none-RAP shock and the procedure was the same as the stock shocks.
I believe if the shaft is turning perhaps the lock nut is not tight.
If I recall all I needed to do was turn the shock housing.

you shouldn't have to hold the shock shaft when adjusting once the lock nut is undone, but sometimes the tension of the spring causes the whole shock body to rotate when you turn the preload adjuster.
I hold the shock shaft just behind the front mounts with a spanner, there is a flat section on the original shocks for this purpose, (not sure about the 422s) when undoing the lock nut, and I back the lock nut all the way off to be sure that it's not going to snag on the preload adjuster.
Then I turn the preload with the C Spanner slowly, if it doesn't turn freely I hold the shock shaft again until it frees up. It normally turns okay and the centre part of the shock stays still. If in doubt hold the centre shaft with a spanner.
