False Neutral - 2006 FXSTS

False Neutral - 2006 FXSTS
I've had the bike for two months, added 3000 miles to the 13000 on it when I got it.
I did a search on hdforum but could not find a similar occurrence to what I'm experiencing. Occasionally, when downshifting for a corner or stoplight, I will find a "neutral" where there shouldn't be one. For example, downshifting from 4th to 3rd, let in the clutch and there is nothing there. Pull in the clutch and try again and now I'm in 3rd. When attempting to shift from 4th to 3rd you can tell it is going into the false neutral because there is no resistance from the shifter...like it isn't moving anything.
This is random, I may ride 100 miles and never experience it. It also doesn't seem to be related to a particular gear; sometimes it is 4th to 3rd, and sometimes it is 3rd to 2nd. Never on upshifts, only downshifting. It also only happens when I've been riding for a while and everything is warmed up, never when the engine/transmission are cold.
Fluid levels are where they are supposed to be, checked when hot. Will be changing all fluids next week hoping that will help.
Hoping it isn't some serious mechanical issue...anyone else experience this? My 2005 SG never did it.
