Default It's build time...05 Springer Classic

OK gang. Several of you have endured, helped and inspired, me so I thought I'd share my build with you. This bike is pretty dialed in engine-wise with:
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]
  • [*]
and more internals that I haven't explored yet, but will as I dig into this puppy. Bought her with 12k on the clock and only up to 13,600 in the 3 mos since.

Unless I find wear or known problem items (like: spring cam tensioners) I don't think I'll need to do much to the internals. Though, I'm open to ideas. This bike is pretty torque-y and plenty fast (for an H-D) so I expect only a retune for new exhaust.

Which makes this a mostly cosmetic build. The plan is to go retro with this thing, so it resembles the 46 FL my grandparents rode after WWII. So, black will be the look for bars and such. I'll be getting or simulating some retro feels, and may get some nostalgic looking pieces. May go Billy boy primary cover, but not going as far as faux generator cover (sorry Joe_G, I know you'll be disappointed I'm not going total poser )

I am going with a Knuck style shark-tail exhaust, and hoping to bring some of you cats along with me on that. Yes you splatttttt...

I've started simple for now and will be tearing down to get some parts to powder over the next couple weeks.

First - added black nostalgia highway bars. An eBay bargain.

I was gonna leave the shipping pad on for protection, but

...I decided to go more authentic.

I'll keep posting progress in case anyone is interested. Let me know your thoughts and ideas. I'm trying to do this with 3 daughters and my own company, plus I don't want to get it so torn down that I can't put it back together to ride when it gets nice here in ATL, so it could get drawn out.

Next post, I'll share the current plan. I'm open to ideas, so sound off.

Thanks for watching. G

I like the idea. I've been doing something like this as well, but I call
it retro-modern. So how far are you taking it ? As far as a tank shifter
and foot clutch?

thanks,

T.

This is my favorite ride and I'm not that coordinated, so no suicide shift on this one. Other than that, I'm using hspring03's heritage springer and authentic 46-48 FLs as a guide. I'm going as authentic as parts available or able to be fabbed (e.g., engine covers, exhaust) allow. But I'm not, repeat not going total poser...but right up to it.

OK Boys...need opinions. I'm making some purchasing decisions and want a compar-o

So EMD has Knuck style primary covers in two options black and sandcast. Black is the "authentic" option, but then again, sandcast casings are authentic and I'm not recoloring my casing. I am going sandcast tranny and cam cover on the right side and black might look off balance.

Some pics for reference:

Some folks feel strongly about (against) sandcast.

I'd get chrome derby cover here.
