Cool Fuel injectors-Bike spitting back

Is is possible for a fuel injector to slowly leak fuel into the cylinders when a motorcycle sits overnight or for a few hours? I have a 2006 fuel injected Softail Heritage Classic. Sometimes, but not every single time, when I start it, after it has cooled or been sitting for a few hours, it spit backs, but then starts up immedidately. It is sort of a like a back fire. Is there any chance it could be the injectors? It still has the old injectors and I have been thinking of replacing them with the injectors called for in the recall notice. Any ideas?

Yes, fuel injectors can leak, but if they were, you'd probably be getting a lot of black smoke on startup.

Does it sound kind of like a sneeze? Could be a bit lean

something is definitely not normal there- Try posting this over in the technical area fuel injection and tuning thread- you'll get more of the right eyeballs on it. I'm surprised you have not upgraded the recall injectors yet- you might want to do that regardless.

Harley will only replace the injectors if they can confirm running or driveability problems. Mine's always run fine, so no new injectors.

ahh yep- thanks for the comment on that. I see that it was only a service bulletin and not a full on recall- so no love from HD unless rideability issues were noted. I don't see how the OP can figure this out though without going in for diagnostics / nothing is coming to mind on the DIY side.

If its is an issue of it running lean, since it does not have a carburator, can they calibrate the fuel injectors? Also, I do not have a stealership nearby, but I do have two small motorcycle shops, do most of them have diagnostic equipment on hand?
