Default 2012 Fatboy gear change issue

Hi Guys, hope you can help, i have a 2012 Fatboy and yesterday nearly home i realised i could only get 2nd and 3rd gear, i pushed my heel down on the shifter but it was all the way down

When i got home i looked at the shifter linkage and noticed it was very loose and i could move it right and left quite a way, (forward and backward)

It seems that maybe the gear shift is going down for 3rd but not returning so i can select 4th

Any idea what might be the issue?

Thanks for any advice

Cass

Then it may something as simple as an adjustment with either the clutch cable, or at the primary case behind the five hole derby cover.
Lots of videos covering it on youtube too

Hi Cass,
Could be the pinch bolt has worked loose allowing the shifter lever to move on the splined shaft. From the amount of play you described it could be that the splines have worn, I hope that's not the case though.
I do remember another thread somewhere on another forum mentioning an after market fix if indeed this is the problem with yours.

Hi Guys, i really appreciate the feedback, i have made sure everything is tight so will wait till the Harley dealer picks it up on the 16th, but cant look at it til the 20th

Not ridden it since the end of May in case i make it worse, i thought as i can get up to 3rd gear i could ride around town but i guess i could be doing more damage, so no riding for me in this lovely rare hot weather in the UK.

Does it look like the stock heim-ish joints are failing? You mentioned it feeling loose yet your fasteners were tight.

I dealt with this exact issue a couple weeks ago.
My bike behaved just as Cass. Turned out my shift linkage needed some TLC. All better now.

All joints are tight but the whole linkage is loose right back to the shift shaft lever, you can hold it and rock it forward and backward

So maybe the splines?
Did you recently have some bottom end work done?
