Default no 5th gear? 1995 Softail custom

Hey Brothers, well the bike is tuned up the the thunderheader and heavy breather. many thanks again.
so I finally opened (tried) her up on the highway. (Im pretty inexperienced, so this was a feat)
I glide thru the gears and up to fifth, there was nothing. just wouldnt go into the 5th, like it didnt exist. Ive never had the bike moving that fast before, so not sure if the problem existed before...
I dont have any problems, other than an overly loud clunk kicking into first.
I checked the level on the trans cold and upright. seemed a bit low, but wouldnt I see issues with other gears?
I just ordered up some Redline heavy and plain on a trans change firstly....

Well if 5th stripped you would have heard it. Bent shift fork or fork rod possibly.

oh sh*t!! I was rolling around 50mph. I heard nothing, and it seemed to be running fine. no tachy.
Sh*t maybe I was in fifth(?) This is my first big bike. I remember counting, but only four down when I shifted to a stop. That would be fourth correct?

1 down. 4 up. Sounds like you were in fifth and was looking for a non existent 6th gear.

If you shifted down 4 times.
Started in 5th
1 click. 4th
2 click 3rd
3 click 2nd
4 click 1st

Have you taken a riders class yet?

Yeah, counting is a beeatch. I sometimes do that myself on the 07. Riding along in 6th and I'm looking or 7th, thinking I'm in 5th. It happens..

It will also become second nature to you after a while, so no counting required..
