I remember in the good ol' times (before cat) we used to shoot flames from the exhaust at night by putting the kill switch in OFF, pulling the throttle a couple of times, putting the kill switch back ON.....scared the sh** out a the cars behind us.

Mind you, getting back to the OP, I think indicator switch on the right is a blooming stupid idea ...that hand is for controlling the bike and is busy enough. Never mind panicking, thick gloves are bad enough, I've hit the kill switch a few times when going to pass someone ...that gets really interesting very quickly
A left/right toggle on the left hand bar would be much safer.

Someone else posted a question about that ...seems strange. As long as the side stand is up, my 2014 starts in any gear.

Bone doc, I discussed this on a thread a year or 2 back. Never came to a conclusion and never took issue with it. No one had a definite answer and never was an issue while riding. I never messed with it. Clutch is where it is supposed to be with no mods to bars or grips. There may be a mechanical problem with a switch etc, but did not feel I needed to mess with it.

Guess it's no different then running out of gas on an antique carb bike. Why I had a sticker on the screen "Turn the Fuel on Stupid." and always fill up my Harley with the trip at 100 miles. You do need to practice. You really do not want to mistake the starter for a signal or horn. That may just tear up something.
While on the subject, do not down shift to far and pop the clutch. That is rough on engine bearings and can wring alternator rotor spline off. Mine did when the motor was stopped abruptly from a blown tire by a friend doing a static burnout .

Fortunately, the fact that you can't start a bike in gear is not a safety issue. There is no pressing reason to fix it.
