Default Got some tin-canny crunchy noises going on... and SMOKE!

Alright, so..

Having some frequent starting problems with my 09 NT. Doesn't matter what time of day, temperature, alignment of the stars, it just does this more often than not.. This isn't my bike, but the same issues are what's in this video I found... anybody know what it is?

I hope you are able to figure out what this is. My bike recently has done that about 3 or 4 times. No clue why.

I would check your battery.

My 14 Slim does this every now and again. I am convinced it is under powered in the battery department. Although, it is the stock 3 year old battery, so, I ain't bitching too loudly!

I have had this problem on older bikes, until I started chasing down batteries with higher cold cranking amps.

Compensator would be my first guess, if not the starter clutch or ring/pinion gears. Sounds like time to open up the primary and start checking things....

I've had this happen on Reaper a number of times over the years. It was always due to a weak battery not providing enough current to the starter to be able to crank the engine over fast enough, so it kicked back (the crunching noise, and cough through the intake). The kicking back eventually destroys the starter clutch.

Aside from a weak battery, worn or loose battery cables can cause it, and a weak starter as well.

This year, I replaced Reaper's starter (original had a broken gear inside it. Replaced with an AllBalls 1.4KW), battery (Yuasa 310 CCA), the cables (the originals were 11 years old and had over 100,000 miles on them. They were finished. Replaced with Sumax Extreme Duty 2 gauge cables), and the starter relay. Haven't had a kick back since.

Cheers!

Is that the best starter to get? Better than the OEM?

The best? Not really sure, but all the reviews I read prior to buying it were very positive. It's stronger than the OEM, with higher output. I can hear the difference when I hit the start button. It spins the engine noticeably faster, and easier than the stock one did. That said, my original starter lasted 11 years and over 100,000 miles. For me, I just wanted to make damned sure I wasn't going to have the kick-back problem anymore, and since the starter needed replacing anyway, I figured I'd upgrade. Lastly, the AllBalls was less expensive than a stock HD unit, so it was kind of a no-brainer for me.

Cheers!
