You will get more scratches on your chrome and probably only you notice it. Can't always look perfect.

Shoot whoever advised you. What I would have tried was rubbing gently with a cloth and some acetone. If that didn't work I'd have tried getting it off with some Easy Off oven cleaner on a rag and if that didn't work I'd use a small piece of #0000 steel wool with LOTS and LOTS of oil an very little elbow grease. But I'd put my money on the acetone or oven cleaner because it's worked for me several times over the years on the occasional airborne plastic bag.

Pull the shield and have it rechromed locally or maybe find a new take off. You can always have them powder coated flat or satin black. It sucks to jack up your own **** but it's better than someone else doing it that won't confess or ***** out of it.

Don't feel bad, my Street Glide rolled out of gear down a friends driveway, $3,000 later I had a new paint job.

You polished off the chrome plating. Wish that was my biggest problem

You should be able to polish with a cotton wheel and rubbing compound

A new or slightly used heat shield should be able to be had for cheap.

That'll work a treat and no one will ever notice until you point it out to them.

When I cut my shields back the chrome peeled away on one of them but an hour or so of polishing (don't use anything too abrasive) will bring up the exposed nickel plate up nice and shiny.

What I found best to remove crap from exhaust pipes is a plumbers torch and a fresh cotton rag. Heat it up and wipe it off.
