softail oil filter type?
I went down to the local harley place to pick up an oil filter for my 02 heritage. He said there were 2 types, the SuperPremium Oil Filtersand the Genuine Harley-Davidson® Oil Filters. Is there a difference between the two besides the price? I bought the super premium one, but if harley says the genuine one will do the job why spend more?

RE: softail oil filter type?
Hey jefflsti,
I also have an 06 FLSTCI. I change my own oil (mobil1 for v-twins all the way!!!)Two things I've done that work well for me are:
1.) Installed a billetcool oil cooler. This oil cooler fits between the existing filter mount and the oil filter. It's made about an 8 degree oil temp difference as near I can tell with my temp dipstick & a high speed thermal imaging camera we have at work. Also, It extends the oil filter out enough past the crankshaft position sensor that I don't have to sweat bumping it (and causing damage) when getting the filter off!
2.) I order the chrome K&N oil filter at autozone for $15 (Part# KN-171C gets you the chrome...and KN-171B gets you the black). This filter has the same rating as Harley's super premium...is the same price and it has a 17mm nut chromed right into the end of the filter that lets you get it off with a regular wrench!
If any of you want to see pictures of what I'm talking about, shoot me an email at clutchglass@gmail.com
Hope this helps

HD Superpremium filters are made with synthetic media which is supposedly better, stronger, traps more dirt, withstands higher tempsthan the regular Genuine HD filters which are made with resin impregnated paper media. I prefer using the K&N filters, they are made with synthetic media.

WHEN I changed to MOBIL ONE 20w 50w for 'V' TWINS I bought theSUPER because the differance if you are using synthitic oil, the SUPER PREM. is 5 MICRON and regular for standerd oil is 10 MICRON. Hope this helps. PURPLE HAZE.
