05 Fatboy also sounds "different". After doing some research, I found out that it is common. Before I installed the Rush mufflers, it was even worse. I had a VROD and it was buttery smooth. When I got the Fatboy, it sounded like the engine was broken with a winding sound.
I was told that it was the balancers. My buddy's Road King (rubber mounted engine) does not have that noise.
My advice, get louder pipes. I guess its part of owning a Harley.

Aren't you glad you paid $20K for an old, raw, unrefined product. Mine is noisy too, I am running Amsoil in all three holes. It's just a Harley I guess.
it's old school, raw, unrefined...

RE: ticking fatboy
What is with these 05 motors anyway?
I was doing some "adjusting" to the baffle on my 2&1 pro-pipe & added a double thickness of new baffle material. Ran the bike today on a 200 mile trip and it drove me nuts. I never knew that motor made all them whirling, clacking, clicking frickin noises. And to top it off another rider said "damm that's a quiet harley." Back home I didn't even wait for it to cool down & I had to wear welding gloves to pull the baffle and junk that fiberglass wrapping crap material. Don't hear nothin but Harley again. What you don't hear you don't have to worry about!!! Ride on.
