White Bros rear lowering kit broken
Could use a bit of advice. Have a 96 softtail with White Bros adjustable rear lowering kit that was installed ~ 44k miles ago (in '97). Was riding to work yesterday and noticed exhaust scraping on right-hand turns that didn't normally cause scraping... pulled over and looked under to find one of the shock rods had broken and released from the swing arm pivot. It looks like it just wore out and broke. The other was pretty much fully extended and was trying it's best to provide some suspension.
Well, this was about the only mod I did not originally do myself... but plan to repair myself and looking for advice on how difficult it is. I have a motorcycle jack, but it fits under the center of the bike where the shocks are so I have to find another way. I can come up with something to support that, but my main questions are around how difficult it will be to screw in the new rods and still be able to hook them to the pivot spots? I can't imagine that they can be pulled by hand nor do I imagine the swingarm pivot joint will relax enough that both ends of the shocks can be connected without having to extend the shocks.
Maybe I'm wrong... maybe once the rear wheel is off the ground, the shocks can be connected without extending them... just looking for some advice before I undertake this repair. Thx, scott
Would also entertain options for lowering kits other than White Bros since these didn't last.
