Stock Tire wearing thin already

Stock Tire wearing thin already
I got my bike in January 2007, and only have about 9600 miles on it so far. I noticed this morning that right in the center of the rear tire tread is a six inch section that I can see the steel belt through. I never burn out, never spin the tire at all. Is this normal to have this kind of wear inside of a year? I don't know how long it's been there, I just noticed today.

time has nothing to do with it.
Mileage, weight bias, weight in general, road conditions and pressure.
My rear went 12.5 and still had some life, but it was rain time so it went away.
My front is still OK at 23k and I figure I will change front/rear around 25k.
I'm heavy, have bad roads, and put most of my weight on the rear tire the way my bike is set up.
I check tire pressure at least every couple weeks.

I swap out the stock Dunlops on my bikes at about the 10,000 mile mark, even if they might go 'a little further'....
With only 2 tires between you and road I like to keep pretty fresh tires on the bikes.
I'm not a very 'aggressive rider', if so I was the mileage between changes would probably be less.
Mileage you get also depends on the type of riding you do, and making sure that you keep the tires properly inflated.
Also, unlike a car or truck tire, which has a flat tread pattern on the road, a motorcycle tire has a 'rounded' tread pattern.
If you mainly ride in a straight line, with gentle curves, more ofthe noticeablewear will be on middle section of the rounded tread pattern.
If you do a lot of 'twisties' the wear will be more evenly distributed over the entire tread pattern, as you will be leaning the bike more and using more than just the center section of the tire.
But anyway, 10,000 miles out of a rear tire isn't that bad.

I've got a 06 FXSTI and that's about what I got out of my 1st rear tire and got about 17,000 from the 1st front. I got the 2nd rear tire at 18100 miles, now it's showing 22,868 on the 3rd tire and I might get another 2 thou. and then it'll be shot. The first two tires were stock type for the 06 standard, a Dunlop Sportmax 200/55R/17, the 3rd tire is a dunlop D407 of the same size.
The most of my milage was to and from work at 90 miles round trip ofhighway riding. I've changed jobs in the last 6 months and now have 14 miles round trip back roads riding. Less milage, less time riding on the center of the tire, and I treat the tires the same. No burnouts, but I do like to GO, and this tire is going to fall short of the milage I got from the first two. I may go with the Metzler 210/50/17 for my next tire.
