NX,

I am of a similar ilk... ex-auto mechanic but hadn't worked on a bike much in 30 years.

The best and smartest thing you can do for yourself is go buy the factory service manual. Probably about $60 with tax but it has all the required items to be checked in it, and it also spells out the procedures to do them, the tools and parts required, and shows all the torque figures.

You won't regret getting it.

Start at the front and check EVERYTHING till you get to the tail light, no I'm not kidding.
The bike is 6 or so years old and has a respectable amount of mileage.
I doubt you'll find anything seriously out of kilter, but you never know till you look.

And take Yosemite's advice and get hold of aservice manual. They may not be as cheap as a Haynes manual for a car or truck. But like he said it tells you how and when you need todoEVERYTHINGyour ever likely to have to.

Just go to dealership, tell them what you got, and they'll get you one. If you didn't get the owners manual then you'll be just as well to get that too. Now let's start a forum fight, while you're at the dealership get your oil and filter. You'll alsoneed new gaskets and o-rings for the oil plugs and derby/primary chain covers. Talk with the guys in the service dept. they can give you tips and pointers also.

I'm sure we (by we I mean everyone on here) support a great number of on-line company's.
But for the best prices check with Chicago HD http://www.chicagoharley.com/shop/
and Zanotti's https://www.zanottimotor.com/shopping/partLookUp.html
They get a fairly lage amount of business from people around here because they have good reputations for good service and decent prices.
I dug around and found out that the part number foryour year bike is99482-04.
Put that into both places and see what they wnat for thim.
But don't overlook Evil-Bay, sometimes you can get lucky there.

Good Luck, and ride safe.

I don't believe that there is any outstanding "gremlines" that shouldn't have been long since taken care of on your bike.
But "personally" if it was mine I would change ALL the fluids, engine, primary, tranny, and brake fluidwhile checkingall of them for anyunusual colors or smells that might indicate something wrong.
Otherwise just use a little common sense when your looking things over for anything that looks out of place, loose,or just plan odd.
If you have any specific questions, do a search to see if its been discussed before. But if you don't find an answer, don't hesitate to post your question. Even if it seems silly or dumb.
Just remember that the only truely dumb question is the one you DON'T ask.
Cause odds are that the answer to tat onemay keep you from getting hurt or cost you extra money.
