In the case of the batteries, I think that you get what you pay for, so I won't try to save some money in this. Batteries are one of the most important parts of your bike. If you don't want to buy a battery from your dealer, buy it from any other place, but I would consider that you buy it of a prestigious battery brand.

Mine lasted about 3 years, even with plugging it into my battery tender too.
My guess is that what really killed it was after my engine rebuild I have tons more compression, and it probably wasn't strong enough to keep turning it over....so I just went with a Big Boar battery, and she fires right up every time! Got away w/o having to use compression releases for now....
