Default Backfire problem

I have a 1999 Heritage Softail. Stock Carb(I beleive) Stage 1 breather with K&N filter. I thik the pipes are stock. My problem is when it is warming up it will "cough" as it gets warmer. If I push the enricher in to soon it gets worse then levels out. It also "coughs" occasionally on the road, usually when I get off the throttle.
I'm new at Harleys, just bought this bike in Oct. Been riding rice since.... well along time anyway. LOL. Any help would be nice.
Thanks, Jake

Thanks for the reply, but yes I did. The day after moving the bike into my garage and it coughed I almost dropped it. The plugs were clean, BUT the guy I bought it from didn't know anything about the bike. He didn't even know it was stage one.(He didn't even know what stage one was.) He owned it about a year. So I will chabge the plugs. And have the 25,000 mile check done.
