Default Saddle bag supports

Howdy yall. Igot some throw over saddle bags for my 08 Night Train but got a questions about the support brackets. They only had some for a 07 FXST and figurin it's bout the same bike I bought them. I noticed that one of them sticks out farther than the other. I'm guessing that's for the right side to clear exhaust? I put them on but it just looks goofy and they stick out too far from the bike. I tried to bend them in closer but them suckers are stout! Any ideas on other ways to go? When I got them I only wanted a temporary thing and went the cheeper way out, now I'm wishing I spent the money and got the quick disconect hard bags......oh well.
