Default Help for newbie

Hello, picking up a very nice 2006 Softail standard on Monday, Im looking to change the Primary,Cam and transmission covers to chrome.

Can anyone give me any tips on changing the covers, never worked on a Harley before asIvehad mainly Triumphs

Secondly I dont like the softail bobber rear fender much....is it possible to fit a Fatboy style fender without too many problems.

Many thanks in advance Ed

These changes are rather straight forward, I've been lucky and was able to reuse the gaskets, the primary gasket itself at the stealership is $45.00. Also look at the Hot Toppers for your bolts, they work real good. Somewhere on here is a picture where a fella put a Fatboy rear finder on a standard, but I'll let you find that one, might be in the standard pictures.

Brown's Plating does real good work, and they have a chrome exchange program to limit the downtime. Here is the link: http://www.brownsplating.com/index.php

Well replacing the covers with chrome ones that is easy you just remove the bolts and gaskets and put the new covers on. As far as the fender it should just be a bolt on application as long as the width of the fender and tire match up

Can't answer your question on swapping out the rear fender, nor tell you what "hot bobbers", but switching out all the covers for chrome ones is a breeze. Make sure you get the right size Torx head for the job. (#27, if I recall...been a while...) As mentioned, if you're careful you can reuse gaskets, etc. Took me under and hour to swap them all out on my Fat Boy. Good luck with it.

Been considering doing these as well. Shop manual doesnt come out and say it but dont you have oil to drain and replace on all of these?

As cspcrx asks does the oil need draining? I know the primary will be ok but what about the cam and transmission covers?

Parts are so expensive in the Uk cant wait for my holiday to Florida...think Orlando Harley will see a fair bit of my cash
