Hey does anyone know about mounting a 180 or 200 on Softail models w/o buying the kit? Have done or seen it done?

A 180 will never fit under the stock fender or between the fender struts.

Look at my gallery. My Standard is a 2002 and in order to fit a 180 we had to split the fender down the center and widen it as well as relocate the fender struts.

You'd be better off going with a heartland kit.

here's a pic from the rear.

I have an '02 train.
Fender $300.00 from V-Twin
Taillight $120 Jireh
Tire $145.00 Wallys cycle world
Turn signals $12.00 Jireh
Wheel $900.00 Hogpro
Paint $150.00
Go cheaper on the wheel (easy to do) and you can do this for a grand.
I spliced the stock harness for my signals and taillight.
