Default Premature belt failure

My drive belt broke this weekend with less than 19k on the odometer. I'm wondering how many others have lost belts before the 80 to 100 thousand miles. Both of my sprockets look good to me and I'm wondering why the belt broke. I was hard shifting to 2nd when I lost it. No loud snap, just loss of rear wheel power. I have a 2003 Heritage and the belt tightness has been checked regularly. The area around the break seems less flexible than the rest of the belt. The rear sprocket has some slight scarring on the edges, but looks good to me. The front sprocket looks and feels like new.

I have no experience of this but too me that looks a funny break could it be a poor quality belt.
What are they like to fit a new one.

And it could have been a shard of glass or a small pebble or other road debris. Doesn't take much if it hits the right spot and then wears and wears until the power hits and it is the weak link.

I was thinking if it were from a rock or such, I would see damage on the sprocket to confirm this. Our street was recovered and the slurry material is coming up and the small (sharp) rocks do float around on the surface. I also notice that the lower belt guard is an L shape that is open on the tire side. My buddy's Road King has a lower belt guard that is U shaped and seems to better protect the lower belt section from tire debirs. If the rocks destroyed this belt, I'm thinking of modifying my lower belt guard.

I'm also wondering if my new belt will be the same or if they have been updated.

Thanks for the input.
