taking forks apart on softail std
I have a 04 softail standard, and reading the manual it says to use an impact wrench on the allen bolts on bottom of forks, now one lower shock has the axle clamp that I can take off to access the boltand thenuse a allen socket but the other lower fork does not have a cap it is solid with a hole through the side for the axle and a hole in the bottom for the allen screw, now the hole is not big enough for me to use a socket only a allen key and it is pretty tight, it's like I need a socket with a2" allen key on the end, any suggestions

I made my own. Got a long 6mm allen and cut off the L part then JB welded it into a 6mm 1/4" socket. I left it about 4"long. I used an impact wrench to get the bolts out. Stripped one but finally got it out by hammering in a straight head screw driver into it and turning.

Using an impact wrench is not absolutely necessary. They say to use one because the bolt fastens to a damper rod which spins freely inside the fork tube; the quick shock of the impact wrench breaks the bolt loose.
I was able to remove mine easily without an impact wrench. On the other hand, I have heard of others that needed to use one. I would try removing the bolt without one first. You mentioned it was on pretty tight; try clamping a vise grip to the short end of your allen wrench to give you some leverage.

I remove the bolts while the tube cap is still screwed in. This keeps pressure against the dampeners. For the deep 6MM bolt I use a standard Allen wrench and use my adjustable wrench to turn it. I keep saying I'm going to buy deep Allen sockets but I haven't (Procrastinating).
