WTK: Interchanging Softail Fenders & Tank from Years 2000-2005
#12
I guess my question is this, will the 2001fatboy carb tank bolt up and fit on my bike as a direct replacement, no surprises no modifications etc. Is it exactly the same in every way as my 2003 fatboy carb tank? Does the 2003 tank on my back have the square cut out opening under the dash or a bracket with two bolt holes? Thanks for the help guys.

OK, this is the break down. Don't let anyone tell you different....
From 2001 to 2007 the FI Tanks are the same. They mount the same and have the same size hole in the top, BUT...
The 01-06 tanks have the same fuel level sender mount, the 07 has a different fuel level sender mount.
The 01-05 tanks have 2 bungs on bottom, but one is plugged off. The 06-07 tanks only have 1 bung on the bottom.
(FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE A BIKE IN THIS YEAR RANGE AND DISAGREE, GO LOOK AT YOUR BIKE BEFORE YOU POST!)
From 2000 to 2003 the carb bikes have their own style tank. No hole on top, just a tab with two holes and one bung on the bottom for the petcock.
From 2004 on till the end of the carb bikes they share the FI tank. They just have a block off plate under the dash to delete the fuel pump.
And there you have it. No more confusion...
And just for clarification, you CAN take a 2000 to 2007 FI tank, go to the dealer and buy a delete plate, and put it on a 2000 to 2003 carb bike!!

O.K. - This is a 1999-2003 FLSTF (no 'I' suffix) carb tank, clearly marked with the white ID label underneath.
I installed it onto my 2004 FLSTF (which has the center cavity). Obviously, new sending unit and wiring modifications required. Other than this, she's a direct bolt on.
Note: Rear fender from a 2000 FLSTF required enlarging all strut holes in order to fit my 2004 FLSTF. Front fender was identical.

2002 FLSTCI Tank
Hello, all.
This is an old thread, but I have a related question. I think I've seen my answer.
I have a 2002 Fuel Injected Heritage with some dings on the fenders, and wanted to replace tank and fenders and give it a new look. I found a nice custom paint set for an 00 to 01 Heritage at a reasonable price. Since it is an 00 - 01, it must be carb which means it won't fit my FI - is that correct?
It sounds like a FI tank can be modified to work for carb, but not the other way around. Correct?
Thanks for you help.
