WTK: Interchanging Softail Fenders & Tank from Years 2000-2005
I've been cruising ebay looking for a replacement set of tins for my 2001 EFI Night Train. A complete set of tins would be pretty expensive so I'll probably have to part it out from different sources. The new tins will be painted flat black to match the look of the Night Train.
The million dollar question is ... are there differences with the tank & fender in the years from 2000 to 2005?
From reading here and other internet sources, the 2000-2005 fender for the FXST* tins are the same and should fit properly without modification. The mounting points and holes have not changed and should be a direct bolt on replacement.
The tanks however changed in 2004 and may require modification to fit. I haven't found what those changes are OR what the required modifications would be. As long as I stick with an EFI tank, what else do I need to know?
Can anyone validate the above and shed some light on just what WILL and WILL NOT fit?
Are there any online sources to help me in proper fitting?

Any 2000 and up rear fender will fit. Also, any 1984 and up front fender will fit as H-D has never changed the front fender on the softails.
As for the tank, you will have to get a FI tank that has the large center hole. I think the 2001 tank has two connections out of the bottom for the fuel injection. One for supply and one for return. I am not sure if the later tanks have both connections as they changed the FI models sometime after FI was introduced on the softails. Check with the dealer.
The change in tanks for 2004 was that H-D uses the same tanks on FI and carb models.

RE: WTK: Interchanging Softail Fenders & Tank from Years 2000-2005
I just got back from my dealer.
The parts guy told me that 2000-2005 rear fenders are the same and just about any Wide Glide front fender will work too. For tanks, he said to stay in the 2001-2003 range as the 2004, 2005 & 2006 differ in the way they mount.

All the heritage, fatboy and deluxe tanks mount the same. 1 bolt through the frotn adn one in teh rear. I avhe a tank currently for my efi that has the two holes although one has always been plugged. My bike is an 02 EFI. 01EFI was MM, not Delphi. 02 was the first year of teh Delphi EFI. One thing to keep in mind when sourcing rear fenders is hwo the seat mounts. Some mount with two holes in teh back of the fender, some mount on teh sides of teh frame so there are no holes in teh fenders.
Rear fenders all good, front fenders all good.

2001 carb tank and 2003 carb tank for fatboy
I guess my question is this, will the 2001fatboy carb tank bolt up and fit on my bike as a direct replacement, no surprises no modifications etc. Is it exactly the same in every way as my 2003 fatboy carb tank? Does the 2003 tank on my back have the square cut out opening under the dash or a bracket with two bolt holes? Thanks for the help guys.
