Default Belt Hits 140/90 Over Bumps on 1993 Springer

I have a 1993 Springer with a Dunlap 140/90. It is an aftermaket rim. I noticed there are rub marks on the rear tire from the belt and after investigating, I can hear the belt hitting the tire over bumps. If I lower the tire pressure to 25 pounds, it is gone and there are no signs of it hitting (I marked the tire), however, I do not want to run my pressure that low.

The marks are mostly just cosmetic and are only scuffs.

I assume I just need a rear sprocket/pulley spacer like a Drag Specialties Pulley Spacer. I can run a run a feeler gauge between the belt and tire and without my weight on the bike, I can get a .020 gauge in there. Would I be safe installing a .200, .250, or .300 sized spacer in there?

Are you sure that's the belt and not coming from the fender. A fender strut bolt, or the bolts protruding from the marker lighters..

Thanks for the reply.

Yes...before I let some air out of the tire, the belt was right up against the tire. Plus, I can see some glazing on the side of belt where it rubbed.

Even with just pushing the bike back and forth, I could hear the belt hitting the tire...it would squeak a little. The lower part of the belt seems to hit more than the upper.

OK,

I had to add a 1/2" pulley spacer to my Hallcraft and KC international Pulley.

If it is only over bumps and a minimal rub, I would think a 1/4" would work.

How much room to the left does the belt have in the primary...Is it currently all the way over to the right?

Here is the picture of mine before I added the spacer.

Thanks.

Ah...that is a good question. I only glanced at it.

I assume I will need at least however large of a spacer I would use on the rear pulley in room to the left on the primary pulley? In other words, my belt better not be all of the way to the left on the primary pulley?

That picture, the belt is to the right, and rubbing the splash guard...It doesn't need to be centered in the primary..It will track straight based on where you end up spacing the pulley..Too far left and you'll rub the swingarm

Thanks.

After looking, unfortunately, the belt is riding on the left on the primary pulley with no room to spare. It is not hitting the swingarm.

I am guessing I will either have to just ride as is and watch it, replace the tire with a stock 130 or spend the money of some wider tire kit.

If the belt is over as far left...(left looking from the back of the bike toward the front) then a pulley spacer won't help. It will hurt.. the spacer will push the belt farther over to the left..I assume the wheel/tire is centered..There isn't any chance you switched the spacers when you put the wheel back on?

Thanks.

The wheel/alignment looked okay as that is one of the first things I checked. I actually bought this with this tire on it so I am not sure of the history and not sure if the spacers are mixed up. A dealer installed the tires so I am guessing they installed things correctly.

I'm not familiar with the 93, but I think it strange that a 140 wouldn't fit properly..
