Kuryakyn gas caps - no fuel gauge (update - pics added)
Well, I decided to try installing two standard gas caps instead of the Kuryakyn "Informer" gas gauge. Maybe I was disgruntled with the whole stock fuel gauge and how lousy it was, or the fact that I could buy two Kuryakyn gas caps for less than one Kuryakyn fuel gauge.
Anyways, for those interested, it can be done, but it will cost you your stock fuel gauge.
On my Deuce, I installed the Kuryakyn gas cap. Here's some advice:
1) Keep the gasket that comes attached to the K. gas cap.
2) Add the gasket that is in the package. It's a small one with a bevel in it, that rolls up the gas cap.
3) Remove your fuel gauge, and take the gasket off that goes between the gauge cover and the tank. Put it on your K. gas cap. It goes just inside the circumference of the gas cap from K.
Now install the gas cap as per K.'s instructions. Simple.
Now, take your stock HD fuel gauge apart. You need the black plastic sleeve that slides the gauge in tight into your tank. The rest of the stuff is history. Once you have the black plastic sleeve off, you have to break off the six tabs and grind the sleeve smooth. Otherwise, the cap sits up too high. Tape off the connections from your fuel gauge. I didn't want to gut them, so I'd always have the option of going back to normal.
Keep the gasket that is attached already to the K. gas cap. Add the same bevelled gasket as for your gas cap. Slide the gas cap into the fuel gauge plastic sleeve. The gasket keeps it tight. Insert the assembly into your tank. Works perfect.
I don't use my gas gauge anyways; always my trip meter.
Looks much better.
