Converting Heritage backrest to detatchable

Converting Heritage backrest to detatchable
I picked up a new to me 2003 Heritage last night, and have what may be a stupid question about the backrest.
 \\;
The bike came with a fixed backrest with luggage rack. I am interested in converting from fixed to a quick detatch style backrest.
 \\;
Can \\;the existing fixed bar and luggage rack work with the QD side plates? The parts man at the local dealer was under the impression that the bar used with the fixed side plates is not wide enough to be used with the QD sideplate hardware. \\;
 \\;
Anyone know if I can get away without having to buy \\;the different \\;(wider) \\;bar, or know of a way to make the existing backrest \\;hardware \\;act like a \\;QD?
 \\;
Thanks!

RE: Converting Heritage backrest to detatchable
Your existing bar will be fine with detachable side plates. \\; The sideplates themselves have a step in them to allow for the QD mechanism.
Sounds like your dealer is just after your hard earnt.
Ask your dealer to show you a bar for fixed plates next to a bar for detachable and then stand back and watch him squirm!
