Here's the answer. \\; Next time you change oil, take your new filter to the Car Quest, or NAPA, or whatever parts place. \\; Tell them you want an end cap filter remover to fit that filter with a 3/8" drive. \\; They'll have it. \\; They're about $4. \\; Then just use a 3/8" rachet with a 6-8 inch extension, and it's a snap. \\; Problem solved. \\; The strap thing is a PITA. \\; CCRyder

if you get a oil filter from K&\\;N it has a bolt welded to the end so you can just use a wrench...it looks like this

Cool! PF 47 is GM small filter they have used for years, thanks for the tips! I do have a set of KD filter wrenches but the side wall is too big, won't fit between the filter and the engine crankcase.
