Angry 1998 Softail Heritage Starter Problem

Starter packed up on my 1998 heritage, purchased a new Spyke 1.4 KW starter , refiited the starter and tried it a couple of times then AARGh this horrible grinding noise, took it all apart and found that the pinion gear was stripped of two teeth and horrible marks on the ring gear also. I have been told that if I carefully file the damage teeth on the ring gear this may be OK ?????? Any Thoughts

I would replace the pinion gear and then file the teeth on the ring gear and see what happens worst case you will have to replace it if it doesnt work
