Default Rocker RPM and speed

Hello~

I have a Rocker and one thing I am not sure about is speed vs RPM.

I know that the 96B should have a 6200 RPM cut out.

The book that came with the Rocker indicated that shifting should start like this...

1st to 2nd 15mph
2nd to 3rd 25mph
3rd to 4th 35mph
4th to 5th 45mph
5th to 6th 55mph

So here is what I do not know...

What is the fastest you should go in each gear?
When I am cruising along at 55mph or 60mph, should I be in 6th?

What is the fastest I should go in 5th or 6th?

(I have my bike past the break in, but do not want to over rev her. i just want to get some guidance so she will last longer.)

Thanks,
Cory

As each bike may be different depending up on intake/exhaust and other mods you may or may not have made, you need to go on what you hear and feel. To answer you question on 6th gear, I find that I need to be going about 70+ to have the bike not lug in 6th. I generally run 5th gear anywhere from 60+. Without a tac, you need to trust what you hear from your engine. Just do not lug the bike, as it does not bode well for the engine if done repeatedly.

This may be a dumb question, but how do mods affect what gear to be in a speed?

3rd - 35
4th - 45
5th - 55
6th - 65

SmackRocker,

I agree with SilverDawg. Just go with what you hear and feel. The engine will tell you if the rev is too high or you are about to lug. Without a tach, we do need to trust what we hear from our engine. Besides, the less time looking at the speedo while riding the better.

These are the same numbers I use. I try to stay above 60 in 6th to avoid lugging the motor. 55 in 6th is a little to slow for that gear.

Man you sure ask some different questions. First find out if your gears are the same as the 07 softails.
I have a 07 FLSTC and as U I wondered what the SPEED VS RPM was without a tech,
After a lot of digging I finally found on Nightrider a forumla that lets you plug in your gearing to get a chart of RPM VS MPH. (if you gears are different you can plug yours in)
If your gearing is the same as my 07 this should help you.
Your shifts LISTED ABOVE are starting at 2k/1st-2nd and 2.5k/ 5th-6th adding .1K at each shift 1-5.
On my gearing at 5800 rpm's the speeds are 45 1st, 65 2nd, 90 3rd, 108 4th, and whatever in 5th and 6th.
When crusing at 55mph in 6th I am around 2100 rpm's, at 60mph it should be about 2300rpm's. I personally dont shift till 62-63 which is about 2400 rpm's. But have shifted into 6th as low as 55 if riding single and zero wind or riding downwind, the secret is to listen to motor and it will tell you if you lugging it.
As far as the fastest you can go in 5th and 6th, the chart I have shows around 120mph in 5th at 5400 rpm's, so at 6200 rpm's I guess 140mph is close to right.
If you could get it to wind out in 6th at 6200rpm's I guess your would be at 160 mph.

BBBUUUTTT! that aint going to Happen. Your tires are speed rated for 115 or their about, the wind resistance will keep you at a little over a 100 - 110 mph , so I've been told and have read that is about all the speed you will get from a stock harley engine.

Here in the state of Ind the max speed is 70 on major 4 lane interstates and the most I have ever had My 07 FLSTC is maybe 80 only a couple times to pass others.

If by any chance you are wanting to ride at higher speeds I would recomend you get a motorcycle made to do that and do it at a track and not in the steets where you might injure someone besides youself...

I hope this helps anyone who needs and reads this info....
