OK, I know should understand all about my engine upgrades, but I am not sure about this.

what is the purpose of the compression caps on my cylinder heads? I know to depress them every time I start the motor, and that it assists in starting the engine, but why?

The compression release caps you have on your heads will help with starting the engine by bleeding off some compression, so your starter motor does not have to turn over the engine while under such high compression. The more compression the harder it is to turn the crank, if its too hard to turn the engine over you could burn out your starter in a short time. You could also upgrade your started motor to a high output type. IIRC the HD version is a 1.4Kw, as opposed to the 1.2Kw stock units....but dont quote me on that.

I have a 80" evo with 11:1 pistons and a Crane .550" cam. I added a 2.0kw starter and don't have any problems turning the motor. We didn't have to put the compression releases on it. The motor starts instantly.
