Default Front or Rear cylinder ?

I know this sounds like a dumb question but, is there a number 1 and 2 cylinder or just Front and Rear. If so, what cylinder is what? Thanks.

I've always heard them refered to as front and rear...not like an automobile or m/c with multiple cylinders.

Peterson, in American Iron, just metioned this in a tech article. I believe HD does it differently than most other manufacturers, the rear is #1 and the front is #2. If I've got that wrong there is only one other numbering method.

The shop manual refers to front and rear. So does 1 & 2 even matter?
