Default Wheel Bearing Issues...

Got a call from the shop last week. Anyone ever have an issue with their rear wheel bearing outer race spinning inside the wheel? Damn scary, I'm just happy it was found in the shop and not at 60 MPH on the highway.

I believe those are sealed bearings so something must have leaked and dried out. How may miles on your bike? Good thing they found it.

When was the last time the wheel was off? Is it possible that it was overtorqued?

51,000 miles. Last time wheel was off was about 15,000 miles ago to change the rear tire. I'd say anything is possible but I certainly hope that wasn't the case.

Is that something they check when the wheel is off?

It happened to my bike and I work as a mechanic at a dealer. The problem is they were lax at putting never seize on the axle at the factory.

That's interesting. Why would anti-seize on the axle prevent this?

I'm not sure whether they do or not. I was having my rear tire replaced when it was noticed. Had them check the front wheel also after finding this but nothing was out of the ordinary. Whew! The silver lining for me was that it only cost me $1.50 for a brand new wheel off a 2000 Fat Boy. Oops, I mean $150.00 It had been removed at the time of sale because the owner upgraded the wheels and left the old one with the dealer. It had been in the warehouse since that time. Dealer gave me the same warranty as you would get with a new wheel.
