Default Shifter Problem

Today when I left work the shifter would stick and not return to the original position. It does it shifting up and down however, it doesn't do it all the time. Any ideas?

One, or more, pivot points in the linkage in need of lube or binding for some other reason. The linkage rubbing somewhere. Something binding or a broken return spring inside the tranny. That's all I can think of.

Sounds like the pivot bushing is crudded up. Pretty common for Softails (happened to Reaper a couple of years ago). The fix is to ream out the bushing, lube it and reassemble.

Cheers!

Just the grease in the pivot point all gummed up... take it apart... take off the shifter and the shift linkage off... slide it out check nylon bushing... clean it up... romove all the old grease and regrease you can use wheelbearing grease... put back together and you're done... takes like 5 minutes. Hope this helps, Ride safe!

exactly my thoughts .. happened to me last year ... very simple job to take shifter off and clean ... maybe not 5 mins first time , more like 10.
