Default Periodic engine light and red Key light on FB

Anyone have a quick answer to what may be wrong if the engine light comes on periodically during rides? When I start the bike, the engine light comes on with the red key light for about 5 seconds, then goes off. Then while riding every once in a while the engine light comes on. Thanks for your help.

You need to check the codes. What year is your bike. I might have instructions on how to do this.

Its an 05. I know how to hold the mileage button and turn the bike on to read the codes, but I don't know what they mean.

I had the same exact issue and it was is a coding problem which I believe started as a result of switching out my bulb set from clear with yellow lens covers to amber and smoke lens covers. Two of the bulbs were bad, pissed me off. Then I noticed the dash panel lights started acting up. I wasn't messing with it. Took the bike in and said here's the set of bulbs and covers I bought and showed them the lights acting up on the dash panel and said fix it please. Didn't charge me.

The engine light is supposed to go off after 4 seconds after starting and is normal. Can't find info in my notes but I believe the light is telling you that there is a DTC in history. Did you clear them? If you just remove certain items, it can trip a code (like the sys relay for one). Clear any DTC's then start bike, run for 30 secs, shut down and check for a DTC again. If a DTC pops up, what are the codes?

Here is the instructions.
It's not normal, there is a code stored in history.
The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes).
Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

1- Turn
Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low
fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the
odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your
bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

Thanks Anubiss and everyone else. Will record the codes and see what the problem is. Have an appointment set up for passing the 10K mark and will have them check it out as well. Thanks again!

OK, i erased one old code about Battery high voltage, but a recurring code that did not clear is b1006 and b1007. Any way to fix this that anyone knows of?

Default Engine light on 2002 Heritage softail classic

Hi, I was reading this thread about diagnostic codes and how to determine theIr meaning. I tried it on my 2002 Heritage softail classic, but the coffee that came up was different. It read "d01clr". Any suggestions on how to find out why my engine light came on? Or what that code means?

I don't see that code listed in this, but here is an instruction how-to on your year bike.
