Smile Polishing/refinishing chrome mags

Just picking up a nice fat boy. Has some hot wheels on it. Bike is from Florida, salt air and rain has gotten to the front chromed mag and some of the chrome housings on the throttle control brake etc. Even the chrome like cables which are sealed in plastic are a little yellowish.

Any advice to clean this baby up is appreciated. Bike is in great shape with all the bells and whistles. As soon as i get it in 2 weeks ill post some pictures.

thanks Ted

Trozenhorse,

For the cables, I'm almost certain it's the plastic that yellowed a little bit.
As for the other chrome. Try out Mothers chrome polish. What I personally
like about Mothers, is it's ease of use and there is no powdery residue left
behind.

When you get it inspect it carefully, your description of a 'murky' look leads me to think that what looks like chrome may in fact be polished aluminum. If so it may be even easier to fix with some Mothers or another brand name aluminum cleaner and polish.
The yellow on the cables is almost certainly the plastic covering and not the underlying stainless steel. But exactly what you can use to clean it off is something I'm not sure is even possible. Its entirely possible that the plastic covering was over exposed to sunlight and salt and is yellow all the way through and unrepairable except by removing the covering.

I had good luck with Bleach White on the yellowing, put in on the rag and rub it.

Use a balled up piece of wet aluminum foil on the chrome. The chrome will clean up like new. Just remember to keep the aluminum foil ball wet when using it. If you have rust, discoloration, or pitting on the chrome, the aluminum foil will remove it. When you are done cleaning with the wet aluminum foil, apply chrome polish. Just remember that if the chrome plating is gone from the parts (pitted or rusted) you cannot put back what is gone, all you do are doing is removing the surface rust from the parts.
