ok had probs wth the rear brake lights staying on and replaced the lever which helped a bit as it was pretty wore...no I have to pump the front brake up to get the handle to return and deactivate the brae lights...is there a way to rebuild the master cylinder or do I need to get a whole new one? Thanks

 

Maybe you have air in your brake line. There are kits you can buy to rebuild the master cylinder, just talk to the indy.

 

Sounds like the spring is not returning the piston to the start point. Might be easier to replace it if it's seen so much action that the lever wore out. It could be rebuildable if HD will sell the parts, but it all depends on the bore whether it's worth doing or not. Requires a teardown and a good look over first. Then there's the price of the parts, compared to a new unit.

New internal parts are cheap and easy to install. I rebuilt one for a friend....the parts came from an indy and were about $14. It included all internal parts to the master cylinder. The bore is probably OK as the piston is made of rubber. I'd definately try a rebuild first.

 

He!!, if that's all it costs, I'd do the rebuild for sure.

Try bleeding first. If bleeding doesn't cure your problem, then a rebuild is a good idea. Did not see the year of your bike, but if a lever has worn out it must have a few grey hairs. Bleeding the brakes will give you a good heads up for the rebuild job. Be sure to absolutely clean the little ports in the master cylinder. Any blockage will defeat the job. Coat the parts with the proper brake fluid when installing. Good luck.
