I've been trying to lower the seat height of my Crossbones by using shorter springs. The problem is that the shorter after market springs are too soft and cause the seat to bottom out. I finally found a solution to the problem by using a 2" spring and fabricating an internal strut. This gives the look of a sprung seat but actually converts it to a rigid set-up. I'm planning on shaving another 1/2" off the struts. This should drop the seat real close to the frame cover without touching it. I'll keep you posted. Photos attached
cool idea. can't wait to hear how it works. Did you take pics of the struts before install. Just curious how beefy they had to be to support the weight of a rider.
I found a set of 2" footpeg extension mounts lying around in my garage and I cut the clevis end off. This provided me with a 2" tube (powercoated black) that I used for the struts. It has a .9" O.D. I'm sure it will support my 200lb body weight.
It i a good idea. Before the Crossbones came out, Thunder Mountain Cycles, a company who is licensed to use 80% Harley parts had a Springer. It had a faux sprung solo. They basically ran the same set up you made.
