Default Air cleaner install questions

ok, I know the first one is kind of dumb, but does the tank have to come off to install the SE air cleaner kit? I've found HD's installation instructions to be severly lacking, so is the install pretty straight forward?

Its very straight forward, and anubisss is right, you do not need to remove the tank.
Even a rank novice should be able to change it out in under 20 minutes.
I think there are only a total of 6 screws/bolts that hold it on. 1 screw for the cover, 3 for the filter, and 2 bolts that go into the heads for the backing plate.

I believe the inner bolts are torx. Make absolutely sure you use the correct size or you will strip the heads which leads to much cursing.

Thanks for the help guys. I just got off the phone with FuelMoto, so I should have the SE air cleaner kit on Monday or Tuesday.

I don't remember them being Torx, but I can't get to my old one right now to check it out. The garage and my old parts collection are burried under a small mountain of furniture.
But if oldgeezer is right, and I suspect he may be heed his advise and make damn sure you use the right size. For some unknown reason Harley and the tool makers seem to be doing us the dirty. The tool makers will sell you a set of Torx bits/wrenches that contain T-10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and even 55 sizes. But Harley in its infinate insanity uses T-27 sized bolts for some things. A T-25 will "fit" but it will also rip the head a new one if its not already loose thus leaving you with a stripped out head.
So make sure your using the right size and its fully inserted into the bolt head, lightly tap it in if you have to make sure, or it will give you a small nightmare trying to get it out after its damaged.

I called a friend of mine and had him check his service manual and there are three T27 bolts that hold the filter on.

Then make sure you use a T27 and have it totally in the bolt head before trying to back it out. It will be tight because HD tightens stuff really tight just to screw with us.

it seems that I should check in here before I attempt just about anything on the bike.
T-27not my sears craftsman T-25 for the air filter.
All I wanted to do is clean my new washable K&N. Two out, stripped the third.
Living with a dirty filter for a few more miles.
