If the tooth spacing and pitch is correct, and if you still have rear adjustment room on your axle, it should work fine. It will have the effect of slightly lowering your gear ratio (i.e., numerically higher).

IOW, it will feel like you have slightly more low-end grunt, at the expense of turning slightly higher revs on the highway. As far as the axle adjustment, your new pulley is slightly smaller diameter, so to take up the slack on the belt you have to move the adjuster slightly towards the rear. If it's already all the way to the rear, then you're SOL lol!

Capiche?

I'm reading this as he's wanting to put the 65 in place of the 66 which would actually rob just a tad bit of take off torque and lower RPMs at same highway speed. Smaller pulley on rear wheel but one tooth maybe not even noticable.

I do not think that one tooth is worth the money it would cost for a pulley and the time it would take to change it out. As far as if you were needing a pulley and was buying something I would give this advice.

A 66T will give a fraction of second in the quarter, maybe but would burn a fraction of a dollar more gas on a trip.

The factors you should watch for is:
* The width of the pulley and is your belt going to fit.
* I believe all HD pulleys are 39 pitch so that is not a problem
* Make sure if you are not buying a HD pulley that the aftermarket (belt part edge) pulley is hard chromed. If it is not that the soft aluminum pulley will wear out in 5K miles. Many aftermarket pulleys are not properly plated on the belt surface contact edge.

from what i'm finding out the one tooth is not the problem, it's actually the fact that they are different widths.

I would certainly hope that an aftermarket pulley being sold for Harleys would be the proper width for a Harley! I wasn't recommending this change... I had the impression he was looking for a bling pulley to match his new bling wheels (earlier post), and this was what he came across.
