20W-50 Amsoil OK in primary????
Got 4990 miles on my rocker and I am in the middle of changeing fluids in all three holes, wanted to be sure that its alright to put Amsoil 20W-50 in the primary. I am going to fill trans. with Amsoil 75-110 gear lube. The manual says to use the same type of lube for both the primary and trans. I thought I read on here somewhere that you can use the 20W-50 in the primary also, please correct me if I am wrong. Anyway I have 4 quarts of 20W-50 and 1 quart of the gear oil, let me know as soon as possible so I can either use it or take it back tommorrow and exchange. Thanks and Happy New Year 2009.

Me too!!! The primary is the least harsh environment of the holes. HD used to push the Syn 3 in all three holes, but I think they have backed off that. They now push the Formula +. Amsoil 20w50 is more than adequate for the primary.

Done. I figure I saved myself 200.00 by doing it myself. Not that bad at all, this is my first Harley and it is a bit more time consuming than the VTX-1800 was, but I enjoy wrenching on my own stuff and at least I know it was done with pride. The trans. filler plug was a bit of a pain to get to on the Rocker (not much room between the oil lines and the big radius exhaust). Going down to stealership tommorrow and getting the screw in type dip stick to make the next change alot easier. Hopefully the bike will run cooler and shift smoother like you guys say it will.

Just curious Rockerman,I would have thought the Honda would be more maintenance consuming, what about the Harley takes more time,or are you refering to having 3 different areas to change oil?If that is it yes I agree it's a lot of oil changing but the primary and trans don't need changing as often as the motor and not having those three areas mixing is healthier for the motor.I think all the Japanese bikes mix them if I'm right.
