Default Need help with trip meter reset ****

I have a 1993 Softail custom and when I bought it the trip meter reset **** was missing. The guy I bought it from said it vibrated out. I picked up a new one (says it fits 1990 and new softails). Well it's too short, the end of the **** goes completely inside the speedo housing before it seats, it goes so far in you couldn't turn it. So I pulled the dash cover to check it out. The new **** attaches with a screw down the center. My speedo doesn't even a spot for the scew to thread into. So even if it was long enough it still couldn't attach. The speedo says Harley-Davidson on it so it's not aftermarket. My Harley dealer isn't sure on this either. Can anyone help?

Hey Ryan,

I have the same problem with my 1988 softail. I've been to the dealer and ordered the part but same problem as you, it does not fit. I then scoured the other bike shops in town but to no avail. I will keep looking and someday I might find one. In the mean time I've fixed my problem with a short piece of 1/8 inch clear PVC tubing that slips very snugly over the stem on the speedo and prodrudes out the hole just enough to grab and turn. It's not real ugly and it works, besides I'm more into function than show.

That is weird. Someone has to know something but for now I guess I'll try something like what you did and maybe try to connect the **** I have to it.

I have a 98 softtail custom and the trip reset is a pushbutton not something that turns. Did they change it?

Actually now that you mention it, it was missing when I got the bike and I just assumed it was a **** but I guess it could be a button. I still don't understand why I can't get the right part. The **** I got says it fits 1990 and newer softails and it has a knurled finish like you would turn it. Not sure what to think now, but either way I can't get the correct part.

I checked it out and it is a **** that has to be turned to reset the trip meter, it's not a button. Any ideas?

I know this is old but are there any updates to this? I have the same problem. Mine fell out while I was riding and bought a new **** but it's too short or something's missing.

Johnny,
This happened to me, probably around '95 or '96, a couple of years after I bought my '93 FLSTC. Luckily I tried to install the shorter **** before leaving the dealer and he took it back and sold me the longer one. It's risky buying on-line since they may not take it back and even if they do it's a hassle.

I took an extra #4 Allen Key I had, make sure it's a long one that will fit all the way in, drilled a hole in the end of it with a 1/8" bit, works just fine. Now only thing is you have to keep it on you or somewhere on the bike since it doesn't stay in place.
