I have to be honest, I am still suprised at the controversy over the fluids needed and used on everyone's bike's. I just figure they must make grear oil and tranny fluid for a reason!!! I am not suprised by the many various brands used or talked about here but I am suprised at the various weights used. What wieght is it that Harley uses and recomends? I still can't even get an answer for that. I am not going to say anyone is wrong but I do ellect to use gear oil in my tranny. I am also going to try to locate some Red line and start out this spring with that in there. If I don't like, back to Amsoil I go and there I will stay.

I just put redline in my trans over the weekend when I changed the clutch cable. The guy at my local shop swears by it. Only thing it was pretty thick going in. Maybe it was cold from sitting in the garage or is it always like that. Need to check on that.

I just switched to redline with shockproof and it was thick as hell going in. But I love the improved shifting the reduced noise and neutral is like butter. I read alot of posts before trying it and had a local indy shop tell me to use it and I am happy so far. I switched to Redline primary fluid also. Still using Mobil in the engine for now.

The service manual says to use
Formula+ transmission and primary chaincase lubricant.
I am putting royal purple max gear ( 75W- 90) in the tranny.
Is this gonna be ok for the primary?
Ultimate goal is to use RP for all my bike lubricants.

It also looks like the dealer(?) put pipe dope on the drain plug. The manual makes no mention of any thread sealers. Any ideas?

That gear oil will be fine. The drain plug is not a tight fit so it doesn't get stripped, so thread sealer can help it to keep from leaking.

Really,,, this just shows us that U have no idea of what to do...

When I was new to HD's I'd at least read and loook in here before I'd ask a question..

U really need to do the same....

IF U use the same oil in all three,,, How do U tell a diff in them???

LOOK through the OIL Treads in here,, I know U may have to spend an little time,, but U'll be surprised at what U'll learn...

HERE I'll even give U the link,, cause U haven't look in here to know what the forum has to offer. Nor has anyone else offered to help you to find it.

I talked to an experienced hand, and he told me that doping the threads is a carryover from the days when the Harley O-rings were junk from a low bidder.
