Default Ground wire on handlebars

Is anyone using this wire and what is its purpose because it does not appear to be grounding anything? I installed the chrome handlebar riser hardware kit(63026-05) and the instructions say to reuse the ground wire and washer but when I tighten the cap screw the wire and washer is still loose inside of the decorative washer!! Is this wire really needed???

I was told that if the ground wire is not there, your ground is going through the neck bearings. Don't know if that is really true, but I don't want to take the chance.

Huh... No wonder my grease started pouring out... lol I swapped my trees for raked one and lost the ground wire... Looks better and runs fine. Ride Safe!

Your right, and if there is enough grease in there its conceivable that the turn signals might suddenly stop working on you if you don't have that wire in place.
