Default What RPM at given speed-gear?

Ok, here's a question for the technically oriented...

I have an 04 Fat Boy with stock 5-speed tranny, wheels and tires.

What RPMs is my engine turning at the following gear/speed?

1) 3rd gear at 45 mph?

2) 4th gear at 60 mph?

3) 5th gear at 75 mph?

Yeah, I know...buy a tach....but I changed to drag bars and can't find a small diameter, anolog tach that mounts where I want it...

My cam (Andrews 55) performs at 2600-6200 RPM. I want to know if I am fully utilizing the cams, and running it where it should be run. If I need to accelerate moderately hard to hard, I shift when I feel it begins to stop 'pulling' well (accelerating) in each gear...you know the point where it stops pulling so well and is mainly sucking air.

Thanks all.
Regards

If your cam comes on at 2600 rpms and does not peak til 6,000 rpms like you say, and you shift as early as you do, you are not fully utilizing your cams. Lots of folks shift earlier than they think they do, and over cam... And if they "feel" the cam come on like a switch, they think it is a better cam than one that comes on earlier and smoother or more linear. Or, if the cam has a higher part number it must be better... lol Not directing all this towards you, just common stuff I see happen...

Here is something I put together awhile ago. Not exactly what you asked for, but gives you a good idea where you are in terms of rpms and shifting. These numbers are for our bikes, 5 speed and 3.15 gearing.

MPH @ 4500 rpm:

Gear mph
1 --- 35
2 --- 50
3 --- 70
4 --- 90
5 --- 105

MPH @ 4000 rpm

1 --- 32
2 --- 45
3 --- 61
4 --- 80
5 --- 95

You can see that you "could" be better served with a cam that provides more tq earlier, provides max tq around 4k, which is still a much higher rpm than you are typically riding and/or shifting at.

Again, I am going off of what you said about your cams tq behavior of 2600-6200 rpm's. Whats actually important though, as long as you enjoy the cams and ride, dont worry about it!

btw - good job doing the cam install yourself!

Kuma,

Thanks for the info. I like the 55 cam alot with my set-up. With 95 ci and 10:1 comp, I never felt any shortage of power at the low end with this cam or the HD 251 I had before it. The cams give me that 'extra' I like at highway speeds/RPMs.

From what you're telling me, I'm guilty of not putting as many rpm's to it as I could and still operate the engine safely. That's an easy fix....grip it and rip it... Per Andrew's the 55s perform at 2600-6200. I'm not interested in running at or near 6200...I just want to use the cams more efficiently, and still get some longevity out of my motor. Without a tach, its hard to know exactly where I am. Your numbers give me some reference points to help determine my preferred limits for this motor/cam.

Regards
