Why is it more annoying with a full face helmet on? Is the noise getting inside your helmet and reverberating around or something? If so, it might be the helmet has a crap ear box, or is too big.
I've never experienced that before, and have always worn Shoei's or Arai's(both have really good ear boxes), and like you...ear plugs.

what a horrible effect on sound (with the louder pipes of course).

I've always noticed the same. Ear plugs at a must with a helmet. Cracking the shield doesn't really help much. I have tinitus anyways, so it's hard to tell if the noise is ringing my ears, or it I can just hear the ring better with the ear plugs in.....which is usually the case. I'd say try new baffles, that's what I'm doing. Its a certain frequency that'll give you a headache, and maybe you can change that a bit and still have loud.

I had bad Tinnitus for a few years, been to the specialists with no luck.
Cutting back on the Aspirin regimen pretty much cured it. Very minimal now and often none at all.

well...cracking the shield and/or wearing the shield up minimizes the noise level in the helmet for me...I wear an Arai..just has to do with the type of helmet in this case full faced and the height of the your shield on the bike. It can make for more wind turbulence in the helmet if the shield is a bit high...

I use a half shell in summer and 3/4 shield in winter, the 3/4 Harley Shield cuts the sound in half.
I use V&H long shots with Quiet baffles, I have noticed when I take the windshield off, the sound is quieter, When I put the windshield on, the sound is louder, because the noise bouces back off the windshield.
In the summer with half shell, the noise is annoying on long trips, but I luv it compared to the stock pipes. I welded the stock pipes to the wall inside the shop, just to look at, thats all they are good for!

Full face helmet with terrible pipe resonance
Anybody had any luck finding a helmet that does not resonate and echo the short shots? I get pounded by the low frequency.
I recently experienced this very same phenomenon while looking for a warmer safer helmet.
If I had test rode my bike while wearing a full helmet I would not have bought it. I bought a 1/2 helmet to use during my safety class and been riding with it for a little over a month.
I recently started wearing ear plugs and I like it.
I'm new to cycling and posting forums pls forgive if this thread is too old to reply too.

I ran some Bub Stubbies on my Evo Low Rider and the sound was nice but the pipes were too short. Went with a full length staggered pipe set and the noise was dumped out near the rear wheel, what a difference.
Never wore a full face so I have no input there. Try a different helmet or longer pipes. Try the Surefire Sonic Defender ear plugs, we wore them in the military and they work great.

I "think" it will fit....
I was happy since Harley went to smaller 12mm bungs (from 18mm) and that is what I welded in.
Adapters are available to go from 18mm to 12mm but I am concerned the sensors are not deep enough in the pipe with them.
The early V&H head pipes fit my '13 perfectly. I asked about fit on this Forum before I bought them:

I am very happy with the sound and power of this system. Quieter than the Paughco slip ons I had. I wear a full face helmet, and the Q/R windshield is usually off, but now that I have Fangs I have been using the windshield more.
Hey, How about having these guys work on your stock mufflers?
