Default replacing fuel guage

my problem is that I need to replace the fuel guage on my 2007 Softail Custom, does anyone know:

do you have to remove the tank to reattach the wires to the wiring harness ?

or can you use the existing hole on top of the fuel tank to reach the wiring harness ?

last one, does the wires connecting the fuel gage just plug into the wiring harness ?

I am a novice and thank you for any help at all ....

It is a real pain but you can get to the conector and unplug it under the tank then remove the pins from the conector and pull them up through the hole in the tank. Just make sure you insert the new wires right so the colors match (black, orange, and yellow).

CP from another forum

The wiring goes threw a little hole from the top of the tank to the bottom of it.The wires are just in front of the horn and come out the bottom of the tank and connect to a small connection near the frame at the top of the motor mount or near the rocker box cover...LEFT SIDE OF THE BIKE

Simple. Unplug the connector from the fuel gauge under the tank. Plug in the new fuel gauge.

Default Might be the sender.

Are you sure it is the gage and not the sender? My gage on my 2010 Heritage is not accurate and the dealer is replacing the fuel sender in the tank on Monday. And they claim that the fuel gage problem was fixed on the 2010 models. ???
