New Softtail oil change/cooler install
I replaced my '99 Road King with a new Springer Classic earlier this year and absolutely love it (I fell in love with the style when they introduced it in '95). Now that it has been broken in and the first service done, I will be doing my own oil changes in between the regular factory services as more time passes than mile (2 young kids.... ya know).
Anyway...
1) For oil changes, does one drain both the oil tank AND the engine crankcase or just the oil tank? And there is a drain plug below the tank tucked up under the frame, right?
2) How many quarts do you put into the tank for the proper amount of oil?
3) Any tips on installing either the H-D oil cooler or a Jagg cooler?
Thanks mucho!
Carl

You should always change the filter when doing the oil change and drain the oil tank. The drain plug is located at the frame below the oil tank. You will see a rubber hose dropping down from the tank to the bottom of the frame. Check the "o" ring on the drain plug and replace if necessary. I bought a few to keep for future service. The oil filter is the premium filter that you buy from Harley.
I use the 20-50 Harley regular oil and their tranny oil for the transmission and primary case. The engine requires 3.5 quarts, don't forget to put the plug back in before you start filling the oil tank or it might take a few more quarts!
The primary case takes about 26 oz and the tranny takes about 24 oz, I may have that backwards, but they both take about a quart each of the heavy gear oil. Harley now recommends the same oil for both the primary and the transmission. The manual shows separate oils for both, not the case anymore.
I hope this helps

The book states 3.5 quarts. Typically about 24 oz of dirty oil remains in the bottom of the engine on an oil change. There is a way to purge out the old oil (see link below). If you don't purge you may only need about 3 quarts on a oil and filter change. The manual states to fill the tank ( I used 3 quarts), start the engine and let it run a few minutes with the bike upright and then shut it down and re-check it while on the sidestand. Overfilling can cause oil blow-by (from the rocker boxes, I think) and will dump excess oil into the aircleaner, right side of the engine and the pants legs. Could be better to err on the low side and add some if needed. H-D states you can use their Screamin' Eagle Synthetic in all oil cases. I'm sure they would. The stuff costs $9.00 a quart!
I use H-D 360 20W50 in the engine, Formula Plus in the primary case and Bel Ray in the transmission. So far, so good.

Mike05:
I have a friend in LA who has been riding Harleys since the 1960 and he swears by BelRay oil in the tranny. Plus he will use nothing but the synthetic Amzoil in the engine and primary. Works in maintenance and claims it makes a big difference in the life of the engine.
I have no clue as to if that is fact or fiction, although I trust him completely, bright guy.
I may do a switch after my warranty goes away and use the Amzoil synthetic and Bel Ray combo.

The Amzoil you can use (And I do) in all 3 locations.
I've used amzoil for years in everything and have not had a problem yet.
And no I do not sell it I buy it from a farm store called Fleet Farm. Way cheeper than Harley synthetic.
And according to the Michigan State University testiing using the 3 ball and scuff testing its the best oil on the market.
