Default Tips for removal of stuck oil check ball.

I have a stuck oil check ball. I can feel it with a pick. I have tried a manetic tipped tool. any tips? wondering if I can put a small screwdriver in the hole beside the ball and force it sideways? I have the problem of oil dumping out the breather tube. does NOT go away after running for a while.

Or its time to remove the oil pump and go fishing?

I saw an article some time ago about this issue... I think it was in AIM. I wouldn't try prying on the ball with a screwdriver... you won't hurt the ball but you could burr the case. My recollection of the article isn't such that I can tell you what they did, but it wasn't a major operation or I would have remembered. So... in a round about way I'm suggesting you check for the right answer from someone that has had the problem before proceding because you shouldn't be having a big problem.

Sorry I'm too old to remember. I know it's frustrating.

You said that you tried a magnetic tipped tool, but have you actually tried a telescoping magnet. It looks like a nicer ballpoint pen on the outside, but then it telescopes out to go straight down the tube to make actual contact with the metal ball. I have used this each and everytime that I needed to get one out, and it never has failed me. They have cheap versions at Harbor Freight tools..

If it is truly stuck, then try to stop by and ask a certified HD mechanic at one of the shops. I agree that I would not try to pry it out.

Sorry to not be more helpful, if it is indeed stuck and will not budge....

I am using a screw starter. has the + on one side for holding a screw and starting it...magnet on the other side.
I took a flat tipped punch and put it on the ball. gave it a smart rap. used the tool again and the ball came right out. cleaned the seat, installed new ball and spring. Waiting for the carb kit and once running I'll see if it fixed the oil out the vent tube problem.

Thanks for the help!

Can you use air pressure on the other side? Find a mechanic who has a super strong magnet. I know I have one that blows away a standard pic magnet. Good luck.

I've run into the same problem with my bike. I can't even get mine out with a strong magnet. With the pin and spring removed, would oil pressure in the plate force the body out?
