Default replace clutch cable, now "clunking" hard into first gear

I just installed a shorter clutch cable now when i shift into 1st from neutral it clunks hard. would anybody with a service manual for an 2008 softail be able to tell me the procedure for the adjustment for the clutch thats behind the derby cover? or maybe send me in the right direction cuz i'm alittle confused here.

Thanks guys

SLED...

I HAVE AN 06, WHICH I BELIEVE IS THE SAME AS FAR AS CLUTCH ADJUSTMENTS. THIS IS WHAT I DO: FIRST THING TO DO WHEN ADJUSTING YOUR CLUTCH BASKET IS TO LOOSEN THE CABLE TO FULL SLACK AT THE ADJUSTMENT POINT AT THE DOWN TUBE ADJUSTMENT POINT. SECOND...REMOVE DERBY COVER TO SEE CLUTCH BASKET.(WITH BIKE LEVEL.) THIRD...BREAK LOOSE THE JAM NUT (I BELIEVE A 11/16 FITS IT.) BACKING IT ALMOST ALL THE WAY OFF THE STUD. FOURTH...BACK THE STUD OUT AS WELL. FIFTH...RUN THE STUD IN BY HAND UNTIL YOU FEEL A VERY SLIGHT RESISTANCE. SIXTH...BACK THE STUD OUT 1/4 TO 1/2 TURN. SEVENTH...WHILE HOLDING THE STUD WITH AN ALLEN WRENCH, TIGHTEN THE JAM NUT TO SPECS. (SPELLED...TIGHT!!) LAST...ADJUST THE CLUTCH CABLE UNTIL IT HAS ABOUT 1/16 SLACK AS MEASURED AT THE LEVER.

NOW...THAT'S THE WAY I DO IT AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS BUT I GUESS YOU KNOW YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE A CLUNK GOING INTO 1st GEAR. GOOD LUCK!!

I would try adjusting it on the cable first. That usually does the trick.

I just did the 1000mi checkup DIY and this is pretty much verbatim of the service manual. Rock on.
