Default How much oil goes through the Oil Cooler?

I just installed an Oil Cooler on my Heritage. I was noticing that the passages on the Adapter Plate were pretty small.

Does anyone know how much oil actually passes throught the Filter and Cooler?

It can't be 100%, I'm thinking more like 20-30% ??

It all goes through. What would be the point to only filter 30% of your oil?

He there "sharp toongue", I am also sure that as the oil flows through the system it ALL flows through the filter and the cooler.
I was allways told there are No dumb questions !

OK, maybe I didn't explain myself that well. Of course, eventually all the oil gets through the oil filter and oil cooler, I thought that just went without saying.

As an example, your engine probably holds around 3 to3 1/2 qts of oil. It is not all going through the filter/cooler at the same time, just a percentage is, the rest is lubricating the engine or in the lines and tank.

What I was wondering was what percentage is actually passing through at any one time. Like I said, the passages on the new oil cooler I just installed are pretty small, even smaller than the passages on the oil cooler bracket by itself (without the optional cooler).

I guess I was a little concerned that by installing the cooler, I was somewhat restricting the oil flow a little. I'm probably just over thinking it a little.

It would be whatever the flow rate of the oil pump is. For example: 1 gallon per minute.
The cooler will add some restriction to the system but the oil presure will rise and continue to flow at the same rate.

Thanks Jim, that's kind of what I was thinking, just needed some reassurance I guess.

Was that the H.D. oil cooler? I'm thinking of putting one on my fat boy, I have the mustache engine guard but the way it bolts to the frame, not sure if it will interfere with the top of the cooler. Would you happen to know?

On your original question.... Not sure about the V twin but on many motors, not just motorcycle engines, the oil filter is not in series with the oil circuit, it's in parallel. In otherwords, it's not like an air filter where all of the air is filtered going into intake, that would be in series. In parallel, just a portion gets filtered, sort of a fork in the road if you will... and the filter being in series on only one of those forks. All of the oil does eventually pass through the filter because it's a recirculating system.
